01-09-16: Myanmar peace conference begins

Not since 1947 has Myanmar had an attempt towards peace in between the state and multiple ethnic militias with a better chance of achieving its goal than the 21st Century Panglong Conference, which started yesterday.

While the conditions are far from perfect with reports coming in of continued clashes on the border areas during the start of the conference, it is still the consensual hope that the talks with have a tangible, positive result when the five days of high level talks have passed.

“This is a unique opportunity for us to accomplish a great task that will stand as a landmark throughout our history, State Counselor and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ang San Suu Kyi said yesterday in her opening speech.
