When the President of the United States of America attends the 28th-29th ASEAN summit in Vientiane, Laos this week, he will be the first sitting American president to ever visit the country.
Laos has historically leaned more towards China and Russia in its foreign politics, but the visit may bring a unique opportunity for the tiny, Southeast Asian country to nurture relations with the US.
Says White House press secretary Josh Earnest: “”It’s a truly historic event for U.S.-Lao relationships and for the people and country of Laos.”
The summit is scheduled from Sept. 6 – 8.
