17-02-17: Crucial regional elections in Indonesia

By Anya Palm

The regional elections in Indonesia, which has a population of about 250 million people, started on Wednesday. Central in the elections is the post as Governor of Jakarta, which could very well go to Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, an ethnic Chinese and Christian candidate, who is known just as “Ahok”.

However, his religion and ethnicity has raised questions of whether Indonesia will remain a moderate Muslim society, if he is elected, even projecting his possible win as a minority candidate to have an impact on the national elections in 2019.
