19-09-16: Cambodian ambassador replies to criticism

By Anya Palm

After an unusually diverse criticism  – coming from 36 different countries, among them Denmark – and directed towards the Cambodian government during the UN Human Rights Council Session this week, the Cambodia ambassador to Geneva, Mr. Sam Ol, now stands up in defense of his country.

The criticism is aimed at a recent crackdown on opponents of the government in Cambodia, and urges the government to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for freedom of speech and for different opinions to be voiced.

However, it is the critics that are disturbing peace, retorts Mr. Ol: ““Some political parties and entities, merely for the sake of their political benefit, blatantly manipulate, incite and dramatize the current situation including stirring instability in Cambodia,” he says.
