The city of Datong, known as China’s capital of coal, was once the largest coal production and export base in the country. But nowadays, coal production is in decline. The state has capped output to cut overcapacity, reduce air pollution and achieve carbon emissions targets. And as China has become the world’s largest producer of photovoltaic power, Datong is now looking to solar power to be the new source of development and wealth.
