Outside of Cambodia Pen Sovann is not a name that many recognize. However, the former Cambodian Prime Minister – the first to take seat after the fall of the Khmer Rouge in 1979 – was a remarkable man who contributed greatly to shaping Cambodia into the country it is today.
Sovann was a passionate politician known for opposing every single regime in power in recent Cambodian history. His was a sharp analyst, and one of the first to detect and oppose changes in the Khmer Rouge ideology, noting how dangerous Pol Pot would become before many others. For that he was amongst the most popular power figures in Cambodia.
On Saturday, he passed away, 80 years old.
