On Monday Russia and China commenced a joint naval drill in the South China Sea. The operation is the fifth Sino-Russian joint drill since 2012, and will be carried out over the next eight days.
Observers have been wary of the location of choice, since the South China Sea is much disputed and it is a mere two months since an international tribunal in Hague dismissed the Chinese claims to a large part of the sea.
According to retired People´s Liberation Army colonel Yue Gang the drill presents an opportunity for China to demonstrate their position in the sea, particularly in regards to the West.
