December 1 is regarded as a special date by many, as it marks the countdown to Christmas. For others, however, this date is special for an entirely different reason. Why, you ask? This date marks the anniversary of when King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) of Thailand accepted the throne back in 2016.
Traditionally, many people in Thailand have a very special relationship with their kings, and past kings are no exception either. Rewinding the clock just a bit to the end of October, the late King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) was paid homage to by Thai nationals all over the world, including in Denmark.
He was commemorated right here at Asia House, as a statue of the king has a home right here in our courtyard! Amongst the attendees of the ceremony were Buddhist monks, representatives from the Royal Thai Embassy, and Asia House’s new face, Melissa Simone Byberg.
Let’s cherish these cultural moments and celebrate the diverse tapestry of traditions attached to dates shared by all of us that yet hold unique meanings for everyone.
